Halloween Trick or Treat? - Topical Study October 30, 2008 - Halloween Trick or Treat? [podcast]http://podcast.gamers4jesus.org/Bible%20Studies/2008%2010%2030.mp3[/podcast] The origins of Halloween are Celtic in tradition and have to do with observing the end of summer sacrifices to gods in Druidic tradition. In what is now Britain and France, it was the beginning of the Celtic year, and they believed the lord of death, sent evil spirits abroad to attack humans, who could escape only by assuming disguises and looking like evil spirits themselves. The waning of the sun and the approach of dark winter made the evil spirits rejoice and play nasty tricks. Believe it or not, most of our Halloween practices can be traced back to these old pagan rites and superstitions. Halloween is a real, sacred day for those who follow Wicca. In fact, it is one of two high and holy days for them. The Celtic belief of spirits being released is current, along with the worship of the lord of death, both are promoted as something to embrace on that day. There is no question in my mind that to those who believe and follow the practices of witchcraft, Halloween represents an opportunity to embrace the evil, pagan, dark side of the spiritual world. So after discovering this, what is a reasonable conclusion? As Christians you and I are placed in this world to be a light in a world consumed in darkness. There is no lasting benefit to ignore a holiday that exists around us, but it also does harm to celebrate Halloween as it has originated and grown over the centuries. So what are Christian's to do? Are you a bad guy or girl if you celebrate Halloween? No. But as Christians we should not celebrate this evil holiday. Tune in to see what God's Word has to say on the topic. November 01, 2008 - North Country Chapel - The book of Nehemiah Chapter 2 [podcast]http://podcast.gamers4jesus.org/Bible%20Studies/2008%2011%2001.mp3[/podcast] Last Saturday during a mens conference at our church, one of our guests, an FBI agent named Luke, who is also an active US Marine Corps Major, visited to talk about current events, his testimony and tell of his amazing miraculous survival as he fell from the sky more than 12,500 feet in May 20th of 1995 at Lake Elsinore, California, wherein his parachute malfunctioned, both his primary and secondary. Luke knew he was going to die that day, yet God saved him and he walked away from his fall. Later he crashed into a mountain, destroying a military helicopter, and again walked away unscathed by the accident. It was at that moment that he surrendered his life to Jesus. In part one of this message, Luke talks about what it means to be a man and follower of Jesus Christ. You'll hear of men willing to lose their lives for the gospel over seas. He speaks of what it means to be the spiritual leader of your home, a man of emotion, what to do when you are at your end in terms of the situations that challenge us all in the life, and to reach the lost for the cause of Christ boldly. Countries like Sudan, Uganda and Kenya have seen the most focus from FRM as the needs in this area have at times been unimaginable. In the last 6 1/2 years, FRM has had 8 staff members killed in the service of our Lord Jesus Christ, as well as 8 wounded and 1 currently missing in action. Wes Bentley, a former Marine, first traveled to Africa in 1996. Crossing crocodile infested rivers and wadding barefoot through swamps he delivered food, medicine, clothing and hope to predominantly Christian native people in South Sudan, where rebel soldiers continue to fight the Islamic government for greater autonomy. This civil war has pitted the mostly Muslim- and Arab-controlled Sudan government against rebel soldiers with the Sudanese People’s Liberation Army (SPLA). Millions of people have died from war and famine since the insurrection broke out in 1983. Despite denials from the Sudanese government, accusations of state-sponsored genocide, the use of chemical weapons and a thriving human slave trade are all true. Wes has personally witnessed children die from lack of medication and food, fields of dead bodies where thousands lay dead, slaves being led to an auction, and atrocities against human rights. He has seen many people die at the hands of the Muslim controlled government. Prior to Wes’ work in Africa, God prepared him as a missionary in Russia where he served for five years. Then on a vision tour, Wes recognized there was a greater need in Africa. He saw first-hand how the word of God can bring hope and comfort to people whose lives have been ripped apart by war. After much prayer, he was convinced that God gave him a vision to reach the continent of Africa and he established Far Reaching Ministries. The first step was to start a Biblical training center for chaplains in the SPLA which raised up men for the spiritual needs of an army that was fighting for freedom from forced Islamization. The second was to begin a child sponsorship program for the thousands of Sudanese refugees in Uganda. The third was the Children of War program. Far Reaching Ministries (FRM) opened all three projects in 1999. His website is: www.farreachingministries.org. In 2000, Far Reaching Ministries constructed two Bible schools in Uganda and began working alongside two orphanages started by Kenyan nationals. FRM has been actively planting churches with both American and national pastors. Wes was also instrumental in getting American and national pastors on the radio daily in Nairobi, Kenya and Kampala, Uganda to bring sound biblical teaching to the airwaves of Africa. In 2004 the Lord opened the door for Wes to begin a new work with the Night Commuter Children in Northern Uganda. His vision is to disciple and protect 40,000 to 50,000 women and children from the Lord’s Resistance Amy (LRA). While God has entrusted much to Wes and Far Reaching Ministries, the Lord continually expands the territory in which this organization is able to minister and bring hope where there is none.
