Valentine’s Day!
February 13th, 2009 by AngelosWho was St. Valentine? St. Valentine was actually two people who were martyred on the same day. Feasts commemorating them were celebrated on February 14. One was a priest and physician who died in Rome during the persecution of Christians by Claudius II Grothicus. The other was the bishop at Terni, Italy who was also martyred in Rome. Both have been buried at different places along the Flaminian Way.
Today, Valentine’s Day is observed as a special day for love. This topic is one of the oldest, and probably most-discussed, issues in history! As Christians, we know that love originates from God and that God is love:
1 John 4:16 “And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.”
Guys, don’t forget Valentine’s Day!
Song of Solomon 4:9 “You have ravished my heart, My sister, my spouse; You have ravished my heart With one look of your eyes, With one link of your necklace.”
Since a good wife is a gift and reward from the Lord:
Proverbs 19:14 “Houses and riches are an inheritance from fathers, But a prudent wife is from the LORD.”
Ecclesiastes 9:9 “Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your vain life which He has given you under the sun, all your days of vanity; for that is your portion in life, and in the labor which you perform under the sun.”
It is important for we men to have the chance to show how much we are thankful to God for the gift He has given us in our wives, and Valentine’s Day is a good reason to show our love for them! A simple “I love you” does wonders.
Husbands are given special instructions regarding their wives.
We are to love them: Ephesians 5:25-33 “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. 31 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”
Please them: I Corinthians 7:32-33 “But I want you to be without care. He who is unmarried cares for the things of the Lord—how he may please the Lord. 33 But he who is married cares about the things of the world—how he may please his wife.”
Praise them: Proverbs 31:28 “Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her…”
Respect them: Proverbs 31:11 “The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain.”
I Peter 3:7 “Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.”
Are your prayers being hindered? Respect your wives!
Enjoy them: Ecclesiastes 9:9 “Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your vain life which He has given you under the sun, all your days of vanity; for that is your portion in life, and in the labor which you perform under the sun.”
Remain faithful to them: Exodus 20:14 ““You shall not commit adultery.”
Prov. 5:15-19 “Drink water from your own cistern, And running water from your own well.”
And be intimate with them: I Corinthians 7:3-5 “Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband.”
Proverbs 18:22 “He who finds a wife finds a good thing . . .”
