Be A Servant!

Last Thursday we began our study in the book of John and we learned that we are to look to Jesus and strive each and every day to become more like Him. In all things good, Jesus is our example. We should desire to serve others, not to be served.
During Jesus’ time on earth, slavery was very common. Based upon historical documents, one person in five was a slave. Slavery could be due to a number of reasons such as war, poverty, birth or criminal behavior. Therefore, the many illustrations and examples of slavery in the Bible struck a sensitive nerve with those hearing Jesus speak about serving others. Jesus’ message became even more clear as He willingly washed His disciples’ feet, which was the lowest of duties in a household.
John 13:12-15 “So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you? 13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you. ”
Jesus willingly became a servant because He loved us so much. And He wants us show our love for Him by humbling ourselves daily in service to others.
Be a servant!
