The Gospel in the Old Testament

February 18th, 2008 by Angelos

The first prophecy of the Bible we find in Genesis 3.

Genesis 3:14-15 “So the LORD God said to the serpent: “Because you have done this, You are cursed more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you shall go, And you shall eat dust All the days of your life. 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, And you shall bruise His heel.”

This verse is known as the “protevangelium,” meaning it’s the first mention of the gospel. It’s comforting to know that the first verse following the description of the Fall of man explains how God would solve this sin problem that had separated mankind from God. The wording from the direct word for word translation of this verse is could be paraphrased to read:

“I will put hostility between Satan and Eve, between the wicked world and My future Messiah; Satan will bruise My Messiah on the cross, but My Messiah will crush Satan in the end.”

And, as prophesied, Christ suffered on the cross, but rose from the dead victorious over sin, hell and Satan.

Amen!
